A simple surface water biogeochemical model 2. Simulation of selected lacustrine and marine settings

چکیده
A linear, three-component (nitrate, phytoplankton, and zooplankton) biogeochemical model coupled to a one-dimensional turbulence closure fluid dynamic model successfully reproduces most of the thermal and biogeochemical features of three marine settings (Bermuda Station "S" in the oligotrophic portion of the North Atlantic subtropical gyre, Ocean Weather Station "India" in the North Atlantic subpolar gyre, and the 60-m isobath of the New York Bight) and one freshwater lake (South Bluehill Pond in Newfoundland). Model reproduction of temperature in all four settings is good. Model temperature gradients in the thermocline are somewhat steeper than those observed in the data of the three marine settings due to the inability of the one-dimensional fluid flow model to reproduce internal waves which can be a significant source of vertical mixing in large water bodies. Nitrate and chlorophyll are predicted reasonably well by the model at Bermuda Station "S" and the New York Bight. Underprediction of surface nitrate at Station "India" is probably due to the lack of an ammonium component in the model. Model reproduction of the spring bloom productivity in the marine settings is good, although post-bloom model productivity is generally too low. Biogeochemical simulations of South Bluehill Pond are strongly dependent on the value of the light attenuation coefficient used in the model. A relatively high attenuation coefficient (most likely representing high inorganic sediment concentrations) is necessary to accurately reproduce nitrate and chlorophyll concentrations. These results illustrate the necessity of accurately characterizing the light regime prior to using the model in lacustrine settings.

Accurate simulation of surface productivity, dissolved nutrient and oxygen concentrations, and particulate carbon flux are critical components of any viable surface water quality model. A linear, three-component model consisting of a dissolved limiting nutrient, phytoplankton, and zooplankton coupled to a one-dimensional turbulence closure fluid flow model has been constructed and applied to a ...
متن کاملNumerical Modeling of the Stepped Planing Hull in Calm Water
This article describes a 3D CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulation implementation of the stepped planning hull in calm water. The turbulent free surface flow around the stepped planing hull is computed with a RANSE method, using the solver ANSYS-CFX. The turbulence model used is standard k–ε. In order to simulate the disturbed free surface, VOF model is implemented. The CFD model has bee...
متن کاملInvestigating the Effect of Free Surface on Hydrodynamic Performance of Propeller
Simulation of the flow around propeller is a complex fluid flow problem, especially when the propeller is close to free surface. In this study, the effect of different depths on the performance and efficiency of a B-Wageningen series close to surface of water have been numerically investigated. For this purpose the ANSYS-FLUENT commercial software has been used to solve the viscous, incompressi...

The study of wave and its propagation on the water surface is among significant phenomena in designing quay, marine and water structures. Therefore, in order to design structures which are exposed to direct wave forces, it is necessary to study and simulate water surface height and the wave forces on the structures body in different boundary conditions. In this study, the propagation of static ...

This study deals with the numerical modeling of symmetrical water entry of tunneled sections. In this study, firstly, the water entry problem of a wedge section without tunnel in four different deadrise angles was numerically modeled. The obtained results related to the pressure distribution on these sections and the maximum pressure have been compared with the experiment results. In the next s...
